Your Complete Guide to Razor Clamming
Whether you're a first-timer or looking to improve your technique, this guide will help you become a successful razor clam digger.
What You'll Need
- Clam gun or shovel - A clam gun is the most popular tool for beginners
- Valid WDFW license - Required for anyone age 15 and older (Get yours here)
- Bucket or mesh bag - To carry your catch
- Headlamp or flashlight - Essential for evening/night digs
- Appropriate clothing - Waterproof boots, rain gear, and warm layers
Finding Razor Clams
Look for small dimples or "shows" in the sand - these are breathing holes that indicate a clam is below. The show may appear as a dime-sized dimple, a small hole, or a depression in the sand.
Digging Technique
Using a Clam Gun:
- Position the clam gun directly over the show
- Push the gun straight down into the sand with a twisting motion
- Place your thumb over the air hole on top
- Pull the gun up - the suction will bring up sand and hopefully the clam
- Dig through the sand to find your clam
- If you don't get it on the first try, look for the new show and repeat
Limits and Regulations
The daily limit is 15 razor clams per person. You must keep the first 15 clams you dig, regardless of size or condition. All clams must be cleaned within 24 hours of digging.
Always check current regulations before digging.
